An essay is presented on the sociological approach of death wish in Sylvia Plath's novel "The Bell Jarr." It defines death wish as the desire to die which often somebody is not aware and necessitates an enquiry into societal factors. It examines the thoughts of French sociologist Emile Durkheim on suicide and irresistible desire to die. It also explores Durkheim's analysis on how a person's decision to commit suicide could be understood as affected by different forms of social solidarity. |
