The article focuses on a pilot program in the rural area of Elliotdale in the Eastern Cape of South Africa in which the Development Bank of Southern Africa implemented sustainable housing for a predominately impoverished village. The article discusses the architects of the homesteads, ACG Architects and Development Planners, the development of a catalogue of homestead improvement products which included house types, photovoltaic solar panels and roof water tanks, and the project's incorporation of the Community Works Programme, which trained unskilled community members. The article goes on to discuss the success of the program and its sustainablity. |
