The authors reflect on the whether people at high risk of lung cancer in Australia should undergo screening for the disease, relative to the U.S. National Lung Screening Trial (NLST) that showed a 20% survival benefit from early detection of lung cancer through low-dose computed tomography (CT) screening. They say that lung cancer screening seems effective under optimal conditions. They suggest not performing lung cancer screening as it can harm rather than benefit patients. |
