Abstrakt: Many patients refuse blood or blood products because of religious beliefs or fear of complications. At Hennepin County Medical Center, a multidisciplinary t e am developed a Bloodless Surgery Medicine Guideline (BSMG) t o help i d e n t i f y those w h o refuse b l o o d products, guide medical decision-making, improve documentation of i n f o r m e d consent or refusal, and ensure c o n t i n u i t y of care f o r patients. To our knowledge, this is t h e first documentation of a g u i d e l i ne f o r managing i n f o r m e d consent f o r or refusal of blood or b l o o d products in trauma patients. This article discusses t h e development of and legal rationale f o r t w o key components of t h e BSMG: an i n f o r m e d consent/refusal a l g o r i t hm and a b l u e p r i n t f o r discussing t h e use of blood or blood components w i t h patients and documenting t h e i r decisions.
