An essay is presented which discusses the prostitution of white and African American women in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania from 1910 through 1918, with a particular focus on the geographic patterns of prostitution. Philadelphia's efforts to regulate prostitution, including the city's reform mayor Rudolph Blankenburg's appointing of what was known as the Philadelphia Vice Commission to detect prostitutes, are discussed. An overview of the Philadelphia neighborhood the Tenderloin is provided. |
