Abstrakt: The aim of this research was to determine the influence of functional abilities, as the predictor system, on the short distance sprint results (as the criterion system) of young athletes. The sample of 30 subjects numbered elementary school children from Niš, aged 14 (± 6 months) who trained at the » eleznièar« athletics club in Nis. The measuring instruments used to evaluate the functional abilities of the sub-jects were: resting heart rate (FPUM), heart rate following load (FPPO), vital lung capacity (FVKPL) and the Margaría test (FMARG). For the purpose of evaluating the results of the short distance sprint speed the following tests were used: the 300m (TR300) and 400m (TR400) sprint. A regression analysis was used to determine the significance of the influence of the functional abilities, as the predictor system, on the sprint sped results for the 300m (TR300) and 400m (TR400) sprint, as the cri-terion variables. The results of the regression analysis of the sample of subjects have indicated that there is a strong relation between the set of tests for functional abilities (as the predictor system) and the tests of the sprint speed for the 300m (TR300) and 400m (TR400) sprint (as the criterion variable).
