Abstrakt: The Ricketts and Shannon collection of Greek and Roman antiquities comprises nearly 190 objects, including vases, terracottas, small marble and bronze sculptures, and gems. The collection was bequeathed to the Fitzwilliam Museum by the artists and collectors Charles de Sousy Ricketts (1866–1931) and Charles Haslewood Shannon (1863–1937). The collection reflects their interest in contemporary archaeological and art historical debate, and they were deeply conscious of its significance in relation to other museum and private collections. Using evidence from the donors’ diaries and letters, this paper describes the development of the collection over some forty years. Objects were bought from a variety of sources, including private sales, auctions, and antiquities dealers. The restoration history of the collection is also described: initially, Ricketts carried out repairs on vases and terracottas himself, but he later used the services of the dealer W. T. Ready.
