Abstrakt: This paper presents a novel approach that minimizes stator and rotor copper loss and improves the efficiency of the Wound Rotor Induction Motor using capacitive reactance control. Rotor capacitive reactance is adjusted such that for any desired torque and slip values the total Copper loss is minimized. In the proposed method, Genetic Algorithm (GA) is used as an optimization technique to find the optimum value of the capacitive reactance and the minimized copper loss. Optimization is done using global optimization toolbox in MATLAB 7.8. Iron loss is calculated from the no load test of three phase induction motor and the total losses include iron loss, stator copper loss and the rotor copper loss. The results of performance parameter such as efficiency are compared for rotor shorted and GA method. The results show promising improvement in performance of the motor by the proposed technique.
