The diffraction field of a plane aperture or a plane transducer radiating into an anisotropic but homogeneous medium is obtained by means of an angular spectrum of plane waves for which the phase-velocity surface need only be defined numerically. This enables the calculation to be carried out under conditions of very high anisotropy, such as those prevalent for shear acoustic waves in low-symmetry crystals or for arbitrary light propagation directions in optically biaxial crystals. Examples are presented for long narrow, uniform ultrasonic transducers launching longitudinal or shear waves in quartz, the latter to demonstrate internal conical refraction. Reduction of the formulation to accepted angular spectra for isotropy is exact, and agreement is obtained with a published approximation method for longitudinal pure-mode directions.
