Abstrakt: The micro- and macromechanisms of fracture of a CM are determined by the combination of the strength properties of the fibers, the strength and ductility of the matrix, and the strength of the joints, which depends on the degree of the physicochemical interaction of the components accompanying the production and operation of the CM. A fractographic analysis and the results of a computer model study of the fracture process have shown that at an insufficient degree of interaction of the components the macromechanism of fracture consists in an avalanche-type buildup of damage resulting from fractures of fibers and their separation from the matrix; at an excessive degree of interaction, plane avalanche processes of fracture of the matrix and fibers develop; at an optimum degree of interaction, there is a longer stage of gradual damage buildup, which is due to 'competition' between different micromechanisms of fracture. Values of strength of a CM predicted by computer modeling of fracture agree with results of mechanical tests. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
