For the investigated range of steels the use of hot tops of mullite-silica fiber in place of sand-cellulose hot tops makes it possible to reduce the top cutback from 12 to 10% with providing of the required macrostructural quality of the metal. The use of the two-layer hot tops makes it possible to reduce the top cutback from 12 to 11% in the production of general purpose carbon and alloy steel. It is economically desirable to use mullite-silica hot tops on a broad range of types of alloy steel in replacement of chamotte hot tops. With a thickness of 30 mm such hot tops may be used on the whole range of alloy steel in place of sand-cellulose hot tops. Depending upon the degree of alloying of the steel the saving is 0.23-4.5 rubles/ton. The use of two-layer hot tops may provide a saving only in replacement of chamotte hot tops for noncritical carbon and alloy steel. Exothermic hot tops may be used in place of sand-cellulose ones with a value of the steel of 110 rubles/ton and more. In connection with the difficulty in stripping of ingots with a sinkhead decreased to 200 mm the broad introduction into production of mullite-silica and exothermal hot tops requires the development of a design and the replacement of the clamps of stripper and tong cranes.
