Abstrakt: A large proportion of product manufacturing costs are due to components not being designed for economic assembly. There now exists a number of techniques to help designers antiticpate assembly problems; these normally take the form of guidelines or systematic evaluation procedures. A common goal of these techniques is the reduction of parts in the assembly; however, this may lead to more complex components which erode any benefits from reduced assembly costs. This paper reports on the development of a knowledge-based methodology to analyse the suitability of a component for manufacture. The evaluation procedure encourages designers to exploit materials and manufacturing technologies not necessarily familiar to them. The performance of the system has been measured in industry and the results are discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
