In part 1 of this paper (Int. J. Envir. Studies, 26. No 3) the authors examined factors bearing upon the knowledge and management of the coastal zone. This included a review of pollution and its management and abatement. Tasks problems facing the coastal zone management team were outlined. In this follow-up study, the specific case of unconsolidated coasts is examined, particularly stressing coastal erosion; counteraction is often indicated and can, within limits, be successful. But any action undertaken is due to have an environmental impact and carry with it economic and social consequences. These go beyond mere local effects, involving often regions, and having even an international effect. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
