Abstrakt: The article discusses the opposing views on children's writing, stressing the differences over how elementary teachers should enact for children's growth as oral and written language users. It calls for curricula that enabled children make sense of what they were doing by providing them considerable control over pace and direction in their production of written and oral language. It explores how purposes of elementary writing instruction have been understood across the history of language arts.
