This article discusses the prevalence of slavery in Madrid, Spain during the 18th century using historical legal documents and letters regarding the transaction and freedom of slaves. It examines the attempts by many slaves to construct their own identities through these legal documents. The author analyzes the laws and legislation related to slavery in Spain during this time period as well as the impact of freedom on the former slaves' social and legal relationships and the formation of their new identity in society. |
