Fluidized-bed fixturing systems have recently emerged as one of the significant solutions to the insatiable demand for viable flexible fixturing systems for incorporation in modern computer-integrated manufacturing environments. Herein, viable CAD tools are developed to predict the performance of these fixturing systems under different loading conditions associated with various manufacturing processes such as metal cutting, assembly, etc. In particular, workpiece-fixture interactions in a compacted fluidized-bed fixture are considered for axial, lateral and torsional loading conditions, which may be superposed to effectively represent a general three-dimensional loading condition imposed by a typical manufacturing operation.
