Average exposure to airborne dust of pottery workers fettling white-hard sanitary whiteware on a ventilated bench, previously considered to afford them adequate protection, was found to be 1.76×TLV (range 0.42–4.36×TLV). The high dust exposures appeared to be caused largely by a recent introduction of compressed air cleaning guns. It appears unlikely that any feasible adjustments to the air extraction rate applied to the bench, either with or without an accompanying reduction in air pressure supplied to the gun, will reduce exposure significantly and certainly not sufficiently to achieve a reasonable degree of compliance with the TLV. Further work is required to develop a satisfactory solution to the problem and a number of options are listed. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER] |
