Tintoretto's use of the pictorial plane offers an effective means for examining Nono's compositional practices, as the composer's choral works employ configurations of planes in a manner inspired by Tintoretto's complex planar designs. By apportioning individual phonemes of a single word to several distinct performers, Nono creates sound-masses that challenge listeners' apprehension of the text, and his music creates density-cluttered as well as sparse planar spaces. Canonic devices often fill these spaces with special moments of rarefaction, creating pivotal expanses of silence that illuminate central textual themes in the choral works. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
