Abstrakt: Representations of musical instruments have been included in decorations of monuments of St. Petersburg since the town's founding in 1703, documenting changes of instruments' symbolism, meaning, and interpretation. The most commonly represented instruments in decorations on 18th-century public buildings and private residences, 19th-century apartment houses, and buildings of the Soviet era are the trumpet and the lyre - symbols of military valor and poetic inspiration. Images of Russian folk instruments (balalaika, accordion) are rare. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
