Abstrakt: The article discusses the historical significance of the introduction to the unpublished manuscript "Divre binah" ("Understanding Words") written by retired businessman Dov Ber ben Yehuda Birkenthal (1723-1805). The introduction is described, noting that it provides insight into 18th-century Jewish attitudes related to Christianity, the Austrian regime in the East-Central European region of Galicia, and the Enlightenment. The region of the work in question is also discussed, which is the area of Lwów, Ukraine.
