The article discusses the clinical, radiographic and therapeutic aspects of jaw trismus. A number of circumstances may cause jaw trismus. An altered position of the condyle may be detected by radiography. Bilateral luxation of mandibular condyles may be caused by simultaneous symmetrical spasms in the masticatory musculature. In a radiograph, it is observed that the head of the condyle is positioned dorsal to the articular tubercle. The treatment involves repositioning of the condyle under general anesthesia. Jaw trismus is also observed in arthrosis, a case of erosion of the condyle or the articular tubercle. A typical radiograph shows roughening of the articular surface of the joint. In case of failure of conservative therapy, radical treatment involving condylectomy is done. |
