The article looks at the Breastfeeding, Antiretro viral and Nutrition (BAN) Study, a clinical trial for the prevention of mother-to-child transmission of HIV. The author focuses on a process evaluation of nurses' implementation of an infant-feeding counseling protocol. The study used six trained nurses to counsel HIV-infected mothers in Lilongwe, Malawi. Mothers were asked to exclusively breastfeed for 24 weeks postpartum and to stop breastfeeding within an additional four weeks. Results indicate that nurses had been implementing the protocol as directed. |
