Abstrakt: The primary objective was to retrospectively determine the relationship between the incidence of potential adverse drug reactions (ADRs) and risk factors in 126 Veterans Affairs patients age 60 and older taking six or more medications. A potential ADR was identified in 31 percent of the sample over a one-year study period. Nearly three quarters of the potential ADRs were determined to be of at least moderate severity and probably or definitely likely to have actually occurred. Only three characteristics were different between the ADR and non-ADR groups. The largest difference was frequency of any past ADR experience resulting in the conclusion that in older patients using a large number of medications, a careful history to identify the presence of previous ADRs is paramount.
