Abstrakt: The article examines the relationship between local authorities and the electricity sector in Great Britain. It outlines the involvement of local authority in electricity supply from the pioneering days of the last century to the rediscovery of energy issues in the 1970s and eventual privatisation. It looks at the ambivalent attitudes of local authorities to privatisation and market development. The article also discusses the opportunities for using energy market participation as a tool to re-empower local authorities.
