Electrophotography, one of the most prevalent applications of electrostatics, is the technology used in photocopiers and laser printers. In this article, the electrophotographic technology will be discussed, from the basic six steps to some of the underlying electrostatic physics of the process. Discussions will include the physics of charging insulator surfaces based on Paschen breakdown, the static electrification of insulators (sometimes called triboelectricity), and current challenges in color electrophotography, all of which evolved from Benjamin Franklin’s experiments in electrostatics.
