Abstrakt: The article addresses diversity in U.S. education, with emphasis on issues beyond race and ethnicity. The authors point to poverty as an important aspect of diversity and provide statistics on children living in poverty in the U.S. to emphasize the need for study in this area. They discuss training teachers and suggest effective strategies for working with impoverished children. They address poverty's effects on family structure, academic preparedness, self esteem, and peer relationships.
