Abstrakt: The article analyzes the entrenchment and interaction in space of ethnic and national identities in an environment in which competing conceptualization of space persist. Both the Greek- and Turkish-speaking communities in the town of Komotini, in northern Greece, have claims to a variety of ethnic and geographical origins. Space making by state officials, minority residents, and local Greeks is analyzed to explain how the claims of the different actors are related.
