The article examines the presence of herpesvirus among Hawaiian monk seals on the remote Northwestern Hawaiian Islands. Cross-reactive antiherpes antibodies that were unable to neutralize phocine herpesvirus-1 (PhHV-1) were detected in sera collected from both wild and captive monk seals using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay developed to measure exposure to PhHV-1 in harbor seals. Initial DNA analysis using the degenerate primers identified the viral sequence as a herpesvirus belonging to the gamma herpesvirus subfamily. |
