The article presents a commentary on the article "New Dimensions in Geometry," by Yu I. Manin in the 1984 issue. It questions why Manin identified spectral invariants of finite-dimensional manifolds as quantum in nature which depends on the totality of the spectra of suitable Laplacians when they are identifiable with arithmetic invariants in some cases such as in special values of L-series for totally real number fields. |
