Rh. sachalinensis is a perennial, medicinal herb. The species is rare with a patchy distribution. Due to heavy disturbance by human activities, it is now endangered. Allozyme analysis was employed to estimate its genetic diversity. Nineteen loci encoding 12 enzyme systems were used. Rh. sachalinensis has a lower genetic variation within patches and higher differentiation between patches than other endangered, endemic species with limited distributions. The genetic differentiation between patches within geographic regions is lower than that among geographic regions. Genetic drift is likely a dominant factor contributing to the observed pattern of genetic structure. Because a higher degree of genetic differentiation exists between patches in Rh. sachalinensis, more populations should be protected in situ, and samples from more populations should be collected for ex situ conservation.
