Abstrakt: This article presents information about the AIDS program for students which was introduced in Florida Atlantic University, Boca Raton, Florida, in 1986. In the beginning, the student response was not very encouraging. The Health Education Department was using traditional methods such as establishing an information booth in an area of high pedestrian traffic; showing a film in the residence halls on condom use; distributing fliers on campus; and organizing a weekly information session. But the participation of students in these programs was low. To increase their involvement, the department decided to use peer educators in the AIDS program. Students were recruited and they completed 10 hours of training in an interdisciplinary curriculum. Their training covered basic information about AIDS and use of effective communication and public speaking techniques. To help peer educators, the department developed a classroom-based program in which student health service staff and peer educators delivered the AIDS material in regularly scheduled classes. After the AIDS education program had been in operation for 2 full school years, a formal study was conducted to evaluate the program and it indicates that now students have been very positive in their response. The study also suggests that there is a need for greater recruitment efforts among students to serve as peer educators and among faculty to participate.
