The article reports on some fourth-grade students, their teachers, and a group of teachers-to-be exploring environmental science through integrated learning phases. The project undertaken involved a dynamic collaboration between a college of education and a local school district that created a study of environmental science through three integrated learn initial phases. The phases of the project included a field trip to a local creek, follow-up science inquiry activities in the classroom, and a multimedia presentation of environmental science concepts. The project was a powerful educational experience for everyone involved and it actively involved the students in learning. Although the teachers used the three learning phases as part of an environmental science study, the method can also be easily applied to other subjects as well. To facilitate project planning, the teachers chose to organize students' experiences into three distinct categories--learning phases--that would build upon each other and help students develop a strong knowledge base in environmental science. |
