The article presents information on a model for the early identification of children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD). The Autism Research and Training Center has developed a model, Project First STEP (First Screening, Training, Education, Project), which is funded by First 5 of Santa Barbara County, California, and is designed to address the apparent delays in identification of children at risk for ASD. The project is part of a larger initiative to increase services for families of young children. Its goal is to increase the early identification of children with ASD by raising awareness and providing access to services, in addition to assuring that identified children and their families receive early intervention and support services. First STEP has developed a three-part package to accomplish these goals. The goal of the outreach component of the program is to increase the knowledge and awareness among pediatricians, health-care workers, educators, parents, and community members of the early behavioral symptoms of ASD to ensure early identification of children at risk for ASD so they can receive specialized services. |
