Introduction: Moral distress is one of the most complex moral problems for nurses working in intensive care units. The nurse's ideal job performance is the guarantor of the quality of the medical services provided to the patients and it is an important factor in speeding up the treatment process of the patients. Developing a supportive environment in organizations can lead nurses to improve moral distress and other related factors. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between perceived organizational support and the nurse's moral distress working in intensive care units. Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional analytical study was conducted from June 2023 to August 2023. The sample size included 70 nurses of the special care units of Namazi Hospital in Shiraz, who were selected and included in the study through convenient sampling method. Data collection has been performed through three demographic information questionnaires, Hamric nurses' moral distress questionnaire and Eisenberger perceived organizational support questionnaire. Data were analyzed using SPSS software version 23. Results: The average age of the nurses was 29.2 ± 11 years. The scores of perceived organizational support and moral distress in the nurses participating in the study were 20.35 ± 5.82 and 10.20 ± 3.8, respectively. The perceived organizational support was at a medium level and moral distress was at a high level. There was negative (inverse) and significant relationship between two variables of perceived organizational support and nurses' moral distress (P< 0.05 and r = -0.689). Conclusion: The findings showed that there is a significant correlation between perceived organizational support and nurses' morals. Therefore, it is recommended that managers and decision makers in the health sector take steps to reduce the nurses' moral distress by increasing organizational support. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
