The word ungrading means raising an eyebrow at grades as a systemic practice, distinct from simply not grading. The word is a present participle, an ongoing process, not a static set of practices. Too many approaches to grades treat students as if they are interchangeable and fail to recognize their complexity. Educational institutions need to start by rewriting policies and imagining new ways forward for the most marginalized students. This essay examines contemporary approaches to assessment; considers the history of grades; interrogates the bias inherent in standardized systems; and explores methods and approaches for designing assessments that push back against traditional notions of grading.
