Traditionally, the plant Alternanthera pungens (Khaki Joyweed; family - Amaranthaceae) has been employed in the healing of various health related issues especially in psychological disorders. The complete observations during exhaustive literature survey, it was found that the plant under present investigations named Alternanthera pungens has not been investigated for monographic standardization till date. Further, it was planned to establish the complete monographic standards of Alternanthera pungens aerial parts as per IP and WHO guidelines. The complete monographic standardization of medicinal herbal plant materials is a unique and constant investigation and helpful for pharmacognostic scientist during research studies. The various pharmacognostic parameters such as powder microscopy, toxic residue studies, fluorescence studies, ash values, extractives values, foreign organic matter, moisture content, volatile content, preliminary phytochemical screening, TLC fingerprint profile were established as per standard protocols as suggested by Indian Pharmacopeia and WHO scientific databases. The various pharmacognostic standards developed from plant under investigations are helpful to check the authenticity of plant and further, helpful for prepare the monograph of plant. The phytochemical screening of various extracts of plant suggested the existence of bioactive compounds, these observation led to isolation of bioactive compounds in future research project.
