This article presents a case study of a patient with alcohol withdrawal in the perioperative period who was safely managed with ethanol. The patient had a history of severe alcohol use disorder and required surgery for an ankle fracture. Hourly monitoring for signs of alcohol withdrawal was initiated, and benzodiazepines were administered as needed. Oral ethanol was prescribed and led to a reduction in withdrawal symptoms. A multidisciplinary team meeting recommended a regimen implementing intravenous ethanol in the perioperative period, which was administered intra-operatively and post-operatively without signs of intoxication. The patient engaged well with the alcohol care team and was discharged after nine days. The article suggests that this approach could reduce the risk of perioperative complications in severely alcohol-dependent patients requiring a general anesthetic. [Extracted from the article] |
