A recent study conducted at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City found that many older adults who are prescribed opioid pain medications may be at an increased risk of falls. The study aimed to determine the feasibility of implementing fall risk screening in a busy clinical practice and to examine the correlation between fall risk and factors such as higher opioid doses and concurrent benzodiazepine prescriptions. The researchers discovered that screening rates for fall risk could be significantly increased with prompts in the Electronic Health Record (EHR), and 43% of the screened patients were found to be at high risk of falls. The study emphasizes the importance of consistent fall risk screening in primary care, as relying solely on medication lists is not a reliable predictor of fall risk. [Extracted from the article] |
