This article evaluates a theory of gang delinquency that was developed by H. A. Bloch and A. Niederhoffer. This theory is based on a hypothesized disjunction between adolescent striving for adulthood and the absence of institutional means of attaining adulthood in contemporary society. The following propositions were considered: (1) adolescents are characterized by pervasive anxiety; (2) lower-class adolescents reject middle-class manhood values because they recognize that they are unable to attain such values; (3) gangs are formed in order to provide protection for their members rather than as a means of attacking society; (4) the principal value of the gang is to be a man; (5) gangs take the position that life is war; and (6) gangs do not believe that hard work leads to success and happiness. |
