This article examines the lack of diversity in the field of orthopaedic surgery in the United States. It emphasizes the importance of diversity in improving patient care and providing equal opportunities for all individuals interested in pursuing a career in orthopaedics. The article presents data on the representation of Black and Hispanic applicants and residents in orthopaedic surgery, suggesting that progress in increasing diversity has been limited. The author calls for a new approach to address this issue, emphasizing the need for personal reflection and a genuine commitment to diversity. The responsibility for increasing diversity lies with orthopaedic surgeons who control the residency application process and have the power to select a more diverse group of successors. The article also highlights the unique obstacles and experiences that minority residents face, including higher rates of attrition and microaggressions. To truly support diversity, there must be an understanding of these differences and a commitment to accountability and equal opportunity. [Extracted from the article] |
