This article discusses two pieces of evidence related to ninth-century Scotland. The first piece is an entry from the Annals of Ulster, which mentions the death of Cellach mac Ailella, the abbot of Kildare and Iona, in the region of the Picts. The second piece of evidence is a series of interventions in the Pictish king-lists, which connect Pictish kings to major Gaelic saints. The author explores the possibility that Cellach may have been involved in these interventions and suggests that the monastery of Abernethy, where the interventions took place, may have played a role in Gaelicizing the history of an earlier foundation.
