A recent clinical trial conducted at the Cleveland Clinic compared two techniques for repairing parastomal hernias, a common complication of permanent stomas. The trial enrolled 150 patients who were randomized to receive either the open retromuscular Sugarbaker mesh placement or the keyhole synthetic mesh placement. After a follow-up period of 2 years, there was no significant difference in parastomal hernia recurrence rates between the two groups. The study suggests that further innovation is needed to improve outcomes in parastomal hernia repair. [Extracted from the article] |
