Abstrakt: This article explores the role of mitochondrial dysfunction in polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), a leading cause of infertility in women. The study examines mitochondrial reactive oxygen species (ROS), copy number, and the association of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) variants with PCOS traits. The findings reveal that PCOS patients have decreased mtDNA copy number, mitochondrial membrane potential, and superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity, while exhibiting enhanced levels of mitochondrial ROS. Additionally, the study identifies eight rare mtDNA variants strongly associated with PCOS traits. The research contributes to a better understanding of PCOS pathogenesis and may inform the development of mitochondrial-targeted therapies in the future. [Extracted from the article]
