This paper deals with the design and structural strength of heavy haul turnouts for reliable and safe operations of heavy haul trains. A two step method was chosen to achieve the goal, to validate the turnout design. First, a measurement campaign was setup to measure rail bending stresses, deflections and accelerations at defined positions, like the swingnose crossing, the switch panel and for reference in a straight track section before the turnout. In a second step, a comprehensive simulation model has been created, discretising the whole structure of the turnout with Finite-Elements (FE). Out of this FE analysis, stresses and deflections were obtained through the turnout and compared to measurements results. Generally, a nice agreement could be obtained, only the swingnose crossing measurements showed higher stress results compared to simulation. This is most likely due to dynamic forces during the wheel transition in the swingnose crossing or due to increased ballast settlement in this area. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
