A recent report from Semmelweis University discusses research on schizophrenia, specifically focusing on the potential model of cortical excitation-inhibition (E/I) imbalance in the pathophysiology of the disorder. The study utilized transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) and electromyography (EMG) to investigate inhibitory deficits in schizophrenia. The meta-analysis of 36 studies revealed a significant decrease in Short-Interval Intracortical Inhibition (SICI) in patients with schizophrenia, supporting the E/I imbalance hypothesis. The findings suggest that SICI may be a potential pathophysiological characteristic of the disorder. [Extracted from the article] |
