A recent research study conducted by the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough NHS Foundation Trust in the United Kingdom examined the current provision of childhood autism diagnostic assessments and the challenges faced by diagnostic teams. The study found that a minority of services consistently met the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence guidance for assessment, and referrals for autism assessments increased by 115% between 2015 and 2019. Clinicians reported an increase in the complexity of cases, with children presenting with more co-occurring physical, mental health, and neurodevelopmental conditions. Many teams faced funding constraints and incomplete multidisciplinary teams, which impacted their ability to provide comprehensive assessments and recommendations for treatment. The study highlights the need for investment in multidisciplinary team expertise to improve services and meet the needs of children and families. [Extracted from the article] |
