A patent has been issued to Thermo Fisher Scientific (Bremen) GmbH for an electrode arrangement used in mass spectrometry. The electrode arrangement includes an RF electrode mechanically coupled to a dielectric material, with separators defining a gap between the RF electrode and the dielectric material. The separators are designed to prevent penetration of the dielectric material by the RF field, reducing heat generation and potential contamination of the ions being analyzed. The electrode arrangement also includes a DC electrode that shields the dielectric material from the RF field.
