A recent study conducted by researchers at Vanderbilt University Medical Center examined the trajectory of depressive symptoms in autistic and neurotypical youth over a 4-year period. The study found that autistic youth had higher rates of depressive symptoms early in development, but these symptoms declined during middle adolescence and puberty. In contrast, neurotypical youth showed an increase in depression symptoms with advancing development. The study also found that females in both groups had higher levels of depression symptoms. The findings suggest that there are biopsychosocial factors that influence the affective profiles of youth with autism spectrum disorder. [Extracted from the article] |
