Abstrakt: "Selves Engraved on Stone: Seals and Identity in the Ancient Near East, ca. 1415–1050 bce" by Serdar Yalçın is a book that explores the connection between late second millennium seals in the ancient Near East and identity. Yalçın analyzes 108 cylinder seals from the Kassite Babylonia, Middle Assyrian kingdom, and Hittite-controlled Syria periods to understand the cultural factors and expressions of identity encoded in them. The analysis reveals gender non-conformity among certain individuals, as well as communal affiliations and social hierarchies. This interdisciplinary study provides valuable insights into the diverse identities and societal roles of ancient Mesopotamians. [Extracted from the article]
