This article discusses the efforts of four Clinical and Translational Science Award (CTSA) institutions in Texas to standardize and integrate social determinants of health (SDOH) data. The focus on SDOH has increased due to the impact of COVID-19 on minority and marginalized communities. The institutions conducted an inventory to understand the availability of SDOH datasets and the collection of individual-level SDOH data in electronic health records (EHRs). The results showed that while all institutions collected some SDOH elements in structured EHR fields, the completeness levels varied and were low for most measures. The article emphasizes the need for standardized SDOH data collection to drive effective care, research, interventions, and policy. [Extracted from the article] |
